Three useful strategies

Choose how to get started

More than one method can work. Pick one that helps you see the problem.

Draw a picture

Sketch objects, groups, shapes or a simple diagram. Pictures help you count, compare and see what is missing.

Use logical reasoning

Use every clue. Decide what must be true and cross out ideas that do not fit.

Act it out

Use counters, move your body, or pretend to be in the story. Acting helps you follow each step in order.

start→move→count

Guided example · choose a strategy

There are 3 birds on a fence. 2 more land. How many birds are there?

A quick drawing works well. Draw 3 birds, then add 2 more and count them all.

Add the new birds

Count all

3 + 2 = 5 birds

Remember: The goal is not to pick a fancy strategy. Pick one that makes the problem easier to understand, then explain how it helped.
