Class 2 Maths · Chapter 1 · Topic 1-7

Patterns

A pattern follows a rule. Look for what repeats or changes, find the rule, and use it to predict what comes next.

30CHALLENGES

Look closely for a rule

Patterns can repeat or grow

Check shapes, colors, numbers and groups.

Repeating patterns

A small part repeats in the same order. Find the repeating unit, then continue it.

○□○□?

Growing patterns

Something changes each time, such as adding one more object or counting up by the same amount.

●●●●●●●●●●●●?

Say the rule

Use words to explain the pattern: “add 2 each time,” “one triangle, then two circles,” or “add a square.”

Rule→Next part

Think like a pattern detective

Try these three steps

1

Look at the parts

Notice the colors, shapes, number of objects or numbers.

2

Find what changes

Does it repeat? Add one? Take away two? Switch colors?

3

Test what comes next

Follow the same rule and check that it fits every part.
