Greater than
> means the number on the left is greater. Example: 74 > 49.
Class 2 Maths · Chapter 1 · Topic 1-6
Find which number is greater, which is less, or whether two numbers are equal. Compare the tens first, then the ones if the tens are the same.
Learn the comparison signs
Compare one place at a time.
> means the number on the left is greater. Example: 74 > 49.
< means the number on the left is less. Example: 21 < 22.
= means both numbers have the same value. Example: 78 = 78.
Big number first: 86 > 53
Small number first: 35 < 56
Same number: 83 = 83
Step 1 · Compare tens
64 has 6 tens. 46 has 4 tens. Six tens is greater, so 64 > 46.
Step 2 · If tens match, compare ones
Both have 5 tens. Compare ones: 3 is less than 8, so 53 < 58.
More tens means a greater number. For example, 8 tens is more than 5 tens.
If the tens digits match, compare the ones digits to decide.
Say the comparison aloud: greater, less, or equal. Then write >, <, or =.
Tip: Read the sign from left to right. In 74 > 49, 74 is greater than 49.
