How to order numbers

Use place value and number patterns to help.

Before and after

One less comes just before a number. One more comes just after it. Count back or count on by 1.

Least to greatest

Start with the smallest number and move up. This is called ascending order.

Greatest to least

Start with the biggest number and move down. This is called descending order.

Number line explorer

Numbers get greater as we move right →

Each step to the right adds 1. Each step to the left takes away 1.

Compare tens first

Put 46, 64, 40 in order.

40 and 46 have 4 tens; 64 has 6 tens, so 64 is greatest. Between 40 and 46, 40 is smaller.

404664

Least to greatest: 40, 46, 64

Order by counting

What comes just before 100?

Count back one step: 100, 99. So 99 comes just before 100.

Read the direction

Circle the words least to greatest or greatest to least.

2

Compare place values

For two-digit numbers, compare tens first. If tens match, compare the ones.

3

Check the order

Read your list again. Does it keep getting bigger—or keep getting smaller?

Watch the direction: 12, 25, 50 is least to greatest. The reverse, 50, 25, 12, is greatest to least.
