🔟 A ten is a bundle
When we have 10 ones, we can bundle them into 1 ten. Ten ones and one ten have the same value.
Class 2 Maths · Chapter 1 · Lesson 1
Let’s build numbers with tens and ones. You’ll learn what each digit means, make numbers with a picture model, and become a place-value detective.
Part 1 · Learn the idea
We can bundle 10 ones together to make 1 ten. Then we count the tens and the ones left over.
When we have 10 ones, we can bundle them into 1 ten. Ten ones and one ten have the same value.
A two-digit number has a tens place and a ones place. The digit’s place tells its value.
In 34, the 3 is in the tens place. It means 3 tens, or 30. The 4 is in the ones place. It means 4 ones, or 4.
These all show the same number:
Part 2 · Make a number
Change the number and watch its tens and ones appear.
Try 26, 50, 83 or any number you like!
47 is 4 tens and 7 ones: 40 + 7.
Part 3 · Think like a mathematician
In 62, the 6 is in the tens place. It stands for 6 groups of ten: 60.
The 2 is in the ones place. It stands for 2 single ones.
60 + 2 = 62. So 62 is 6 tens and 2 ones.
Watch out! 26 and 62 use the same digits, but the digits are in different places. 26 is 2 tens and 6 ones. 62 is 6 tens and 2 ones.
Part 4 · Your turn
Choose, type, compare and solve. Check each answer to see how you did.
